Classwork for Tues/Wed (2-11/2-12)
Get out notebooks and quickly review your notes on Definition from Monday.
Use the Structure of Argument text (red) and turn to p. 148 “Faux Friendship.”
Read “popcorn-style.”
Identify the thesis and list the types of evidence used to establish the definition of Faux Friendship with a partner (you will have your own answers in your own journal).

Do the same activity for “Quake Victims” (p. 155), including the journal activity.

Individually, after completing the two examples, reflect in journals about which methods of definition were the most effective, the most fair, the most credible.

Finally, pick a partner and come up with a (school-appropriate!) word that you both want to define. For instance, a popular one at the moment is love. Other ideas are sleep-deprivation, war, truth, kindness, civility, etc. Your homework is to find/bring three articles each (printed or saved to google drive, either is fine) on that topic for Thursday’s class. The articles do not have to be definition essays--that is what we will be creating. We will be writing practice definition pieces in class on Thursday, in pairs.
